Virtual reality (VR) is becoming increasingly popular for gaming, education, and other applications.
Materials Needed
- A piece of cardboard (preferably 24″ x 36″)
- Scissors
- Glue or tape
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Plastic wrap
- Elastic bands
- Velcro strips
- Headphones or a phone with headphone jack
Instructions
-
1. Cut the Cardboard
First, cut your cardboard to the desired size. For this VR headset, we recommend cutting it into two 12″ x 18″ pieces and one 24″ x 36″ piece for the front panel.
-
2. Cut the Holes
Next, use a ruler and pencil to mark where the lenses will go. For this design, we recommend using two 6″ circles for the lenses. Cut out these circles with scissors.
-
3. Create the Lens Holders
Take one of the smaller cardboard pieces and cut two 2″ holes on opposite sides. These will serve as the lens holders. Stick elastic bands around the edges of the cardboard to make it more comfortable to wear.
-
4. Attach the Lenses
Place the lenses in the holes you created earlier. Secure them with Velcro strips on the back of the lenses and the front of the cardboard panel. Make sure the lenses are flush against the cardboard.
-
5. Create the Headphone Mount
Take the second smaller cardboard piece and cut two 2″ holes on opposite sides. These will serve as the headphone mounts. Stick elastic bands around the edges of the cardboard to make it more comfortable to wear.
-
6. Attach the Headphones or Phone
Place your headphones or phone in the holes you created earlier. Secure them with Velcro strips on the back of the device and the front of the cardboard panel. Make sure the device is flush against the cardboard.
-
7. Add the Front Panel
Take the large cardboard piece and place it over the lenses and headphone mounts. Use glue or tape to secure the front panel in place.
-
8. Add the Plastic Wrap
Cover the entire VR headset with plastic wrap to make it look more professional. Secure the plastic wrap with elastic bands around the edges of the cardboard.
-
9. Test the VR Headset
Put on your VR headset and test it out. Make sure everything is secure and comfortable. You can now use your DIY VR headset for gaming, education, or other applications.
