Virtual reality technology has been around for decades, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that the first true VR system was developed.
This early system, called the Sword of Damocles, was created by Ivan Sutherland in 1968. The Sword of Damocles used a head-mounted display (HMD) to track the user’s head movements and create an immersive virtual environment.
However, it wasn’t until the 1990s that VR technology began to gain widespread popularity. This was largely due to the development of more advanced HMDs and the release of consumer-friendly VR systems like the Nintendo 64’s Super Mario 64 and Sega Genesis’ Virtual Reality System in 1998.
Since then, VR technology has continued to advance at a rapid pace, with the introduction of new HMDs, motion controllers, and other hardware that has made it easier and more affordable for consumers to experience virtual reality. Today, VR is used in a variety of fields, including gaming, education, and healthcare, and is expected to continue growing in popularity in the years to come.
